Educator Spotlight – Stephanie Kapsis

Name: Stephanie Kapsis

Current Role: Managing Director of Talent, KIPP DC

Length in Current Role: 3 years

Favorite thing about what I get to do everyday: Talk with people 🙂

Spirit Animal: A bird 🙂

What’s your superpower: Finding out what makes people tick.

Best lesson learned from a mentor or someone I admire: 1) Be brutally honest with yourself about progress to goal.  2) Always tell the truth. Always.

What I do to make lemonade out of lemons on my toughest days: Think through the impact our work (and the output of working through difficult situations) has on kiddos on a daily basis.

What education equity means to me: All families feel comfortable sending their students to any school.

My favorite thing to do to relax and rejuvenate: Read, watch Ted Talks :), go for walks, play with my kiddos

The practices/habits that help keep me grounded and maintain perspective when I’m feeling stressed, overworked, or unmotivated are: 1) setting small goals, 2) staying organized–coming up with weekly/ daily plans

Who I turn to for advice or guidance when I need career direction:professor from college, former board members I have worked with, friends

The advice I’d give to someone trying to find their career sweet spot:Think about what work you do best, think about where you add unique value
