Founded in 2004 and named for the first African-American woman to earn her Ph.D. in Mathematics, the award-winning E.L. Haynes Public Charter School serves more than 1,135 students in grades Pre-K3 through 12th grade. E.L. Haynes operates two campuses in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC, and offers a rigorous educational program designed to prepare students to succeed in the college of their choice.

ABOUT OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM

We operate on an extended year calendar with an additional 1,000 hours of academic and extracurricular programming beyond the 1,200 hours that every DC student receives.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Social Worker will work with students to address their academic and developmental needs. The person in this role provides supportive services to students within the special education/504 Plan setting and general education setting, including but not limited to: group and individual therapy, crisis assessment and intervention, and assessment and referral for community-based agencies. Using the Multi-tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) framework, the social worker will collaborate with other members of the Student Wellness Team and families to ensure students receive evidence-informed, multi-tiered interventions that support psychoeducation, prevention, and intervention for student success. 

This position reports to the Director of Student Health and Wellness.

You will:

  • Provide supportive services to students within the special education/504 Plan setting and general education setting, including but not limited to: group therapy, individual therapy, crisis assessment and intervention, and assessment and referral for community-based agencies.
  • Collaborate with the Student Wellness Team to develop school-wide health and wellness education and prevention programming. 
  • Provide intervention and services needed for those students with inconsistent school attendance and track effectiveness of services in collaboration with the Attendance and Family Engagement Coordinator. 
  • Participate and actively contribute to all multi and inner-disciplinary student support team meetings. 
  • Represents the Student Wellness Team on the campus-based Leadership Team.  
  • Provide assessment, case management, individual and group evidence-based interventions to students and families to improve student social, emotional, behavioral, and academic success.
  • Collaborate with families by sharing relevant resources, building a strong home-school connection, and making effective referrals to community agencies.
  • Act as liaison for community partners in their provision of services on campus.
  • Adhere to the ethics and values of the Social Work and/School Counseling profession and practice according to the NASW Code of Ethics, Professional School Counseling Standards, and IDEA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

You have: 

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, School Counseling, or Professional Counseling; and
  • Possession of a valid District of Columbia Social Work (LICSW) highly recommended.

Two or more years of experience working with students from racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds;

  • Inner ability, stamina, and self-care strategies necessary to work with a high needs population;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills;
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team;
  • Commitment to meeting the needs of every child in a diverse population;
  • Commitment to his/her learning and professional development; and
  • Strong collaborative capabilities.

You might also have:

  • Oral and/or written proficiency in Spanish;
  • Familiarity with standardized assessments and ability to analyze data; and
  • Familiarity with special education requirements and best practices.
